Earlier this year SACIA (South African Communication Industries Association) launched a Business Code that is binding on all members. This code indicates a commitment to higher standards of ethics and service, and a willingness by members to be held accountable to those standards. The Association is now looking to appoint an industry Ombudsman who will be engaged in resolving disputes involving members who are alleged to be in breach of this Code.

The ombudsman will provide confidential, neutral assistance to constituents to protect against unfair treatment and help resolve conflicts.

Specific job duties of the ombudsman include listening to grievances, investigating and resolving complaints, educating constituents on their rights, providing confidential consultations and offering options for conflict resolution. Other tasks may consist of writing reports on the number of grievances, identifying patterns and problem areas and making recommendations to management on areas for improvement.

Personal attributes and skills needed for this position include the ability to maintain confidentiality, integrity, being open and objective, strong communication and problem-solving skills, the ability to gather and analyse information, experience in conflict resolution, an understanding of how decision making impacts others and strategic thinking.

The ombudsman will also be active in a far-reaching Dispute Resolution Council operated by the Arbitration Foundation of South Africa (AFSA) and should be available to assist in the resolution of disputes within the broader communications industry.

The AFSA (in partnership with the University of Pretoria) offer an advanced certificate in alternative dispute resolution and the Ombudsman is required to earn this certificate within one year of appointment.

This position does not provide a monthly salary or retainer – but fees will be paid on an agreed scale during any dispute resolution process. This position is ideal for an “elder statesman’ within the broadcast or AV industry – perhaps retired but keen to maintain an active interest whilst promoting professional and ethical business activities.
