Gearhouse Group has been the sole South African member of the global AV network, known as the AV Alliance, since its inception in 2012. There is a rigorous selection process which results in only one member selected to represent a region. The selection process involves site visits from the selection committee to ensure that the candidates meet the requirements, can provide a particular range of services, have suitable warehousing and infrastructure and assess the quality of their equipment and production standards.

The aim is to extend global reach and simplify logistics for the clients of the AVA network who can be referred anywhere in the world, safe in the knowledge that they will receive the same service and equipment standards from any one of its 65 member companies.

Every year, the Gearhouse team attends the various gatherings of the AV Alliance, which coincide with industry events such as Prolight+Sound in Frankfurt and InfoComm, recently held in Las Vegas, USA. Members get together to conference, share experiences and discuss industry issues and best practice.

Charl Smit, branch manager at Gearhouse, believes that this is an invaluable collaboration which can only improve the industry.  “It’s been interesting to realise that we all struggle with the same issues around the globe and it is really helpful to be able to swap case studies and to learn from each other’s experiences. We feel secure in that we can recommend our clients on to a high quality supplier wherever in the world their event may be taking place.”

Other initiatives such as the AVA Academy Days and Skills Exchange programmes are aimed at upskilling technical staff and broadening their outlook. Gearhouse notes that AV Alliance guests to South Africa have been favourably impressed at the scope and quality of technical services available in this country and on the continent.
